When it's great to have a camera!
3rd July 2016
Picture
Locomotives pictured are NR4/8124/NR49/G537.
Today was a lovely sunny day, so took advantage of conditions to photograph the diverted 1WB3 in the bright sun, but with some shadows. from the western end of the recently lengthened perway siding at Robertson.

With a number of NRs being (temporarily?) out of service due to accident and fire damage, we are seeing more 81s, 82s and G class locos assisting the NRs  on steel & intermodal trains.

1WB3 today had 14,000 horsepower up front and an additional 8,000 hp pushing at the rear from Unanderra to Summit Tank. That's a lot of horses!

Cheers Ian

From the RHRS President, Ian Wallace:

Recent heritage train arrivals:
In addition to regular visits by the ‘Cockatoo Run/Illawarra Tree-top Flyer’ so far this year, we have been fortunate to have welcomed three separate visits to Robertson by steam locomotive 5917 hauling heritage trains staffed by volunteers of Lachlan Valley Railway (LVR).

We have been led to believe by LVR volunteers that future trains of a similar nature may visit Robertson in the future. Typically, such LVR steam trains are organised through advertising on Facebook and LVR’s website. We will attempt to keep our readers informed of such visits as soon as they are known by us.

Future heritage train arrivals:
As most readers would know, the future operation of heritage trains by 3801 Limited, particularly the ‘Cockatoo Run/ Illawarra Tree-top Flyer’ cannot always be advertised well in advance of their running due to uncertainties surrounding 3801 Limited’s access to the Eveleigh Large Erecting shop, which has been “home” to 3801 Limited for many years. Such access is granted by NSW government agency Transport for NSW through its Transport Heritage NSW office.

Again, we will do our best to notify RHRS members when approved trains will run.
There is a ‘Cockatoo Run’ train scheduled for Thursday, 18 August and for Sunday, 28 August.

RHRS has requested a ‘Cockatoo Run’ train on Sunday, 2 October 2016 to coincide with its Waratah Spring Event, and this has been agreed to by 3801 Limited, however its running needs to be approved by Transport for NSW.

Watch this space.

RHRS Maintenance -
Fettlers Shed Gallery Roof

The roof of the gallery has been leaking for some time but it seems to have been exacerbated once the awning had been built. Leaking water has been able to make ingress into the exterior wall cavities resulting in wet carpet and mould on an internal wall in the model train room. There are also water stains down some internal walls and there is evidence of rainwater making its way into the storage area and the Gents’ toilet. It is suspected the strange odour in the Ladies’ toilet is from dampness in the ceiling.   We have been advised by experts thatThe only answer to this leakage problem is to replace the entire roof with steel sheeting which is going to be quite expensive. To date we have had two roofing contractors inspect the building. We have already received one quote and are awaiting another.

We have applied for a Community Building Partnership grant and we can only hope that we are successful. ARTC, the owners of the building, will also be approached to finance this project if our grant is unsuccessful. ARTC has been advised of our intentions.
The Historic Village of Robertson
By Grace Oswald aged 7.

Student of Robertson public school, read out by Grace at the launch of the ‘Robertson – Our Village, our Future, Action Plan’ at the school on Friday, 17 July 2016

The people of Robertson celebrate many different things like:
  1.  Australia Day
  2. New Years Eve
  3. Christmas
  4. Easter; and
  5. the all important Robertson Show.
Some celebrations only happen every couple of years.  One of these is the celebration of the Heritage Railway.

When this happens the Robertson School kids get to march with the light horseman from the school to the railway station.

A special steam train comes from Sydney.  On this train are people who used to travel to school on the train in the olden days.

There are not many of these people today.  They are too old!

This celebration is to remember how things were in the olden days before cars and buses.

Lots of people come and watch the celebrations and the train comes in.  If they want to they can get on the train and have a look.  I have been on this train.
If I lived in the olden days I would have to ride a horse to the train line to get to school.

Thank you for listening to my speech.

RHRS Maintenance -
Concrete Cancer Project

The concrete cancer project has been delayed but should recommence soon. To date wet abrasive blasting to affected areas has been completed. The next step is to apply a chemical coating to those areas exposed by the abrasive blasting in preparation for the application of a cementicious material. Once this is done painting can be considered.
