MODEL RAILWAY GROUP (RMG) ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
By NEIL HARVEY
The Railway Model Group is working well. We have been fortunate to have another two men joining us. They are experienced in railway modelling and already they are providing us with advice and hands-on work to further improve our model displays. We continue to meet every Friday and Sunday afternoon.
We also received some very good help from local resident Ian Field who built two metal model stands as he did the previous year. For this we are very grateful.
To date the RMG have four completed layouts, notably an HO Australian based layout, and two N Scale layouts - where one depicts a British rural scene whilst the other depicts an American based scene. We are currently finishing of a TT Scale British based scene and an HO American Logging scene layout. There are also plans to build another, but larger, N Scale American layout and ultimately a NSW HO scene. We have learnt a lot over the years and the intention is to ensure our work is to the highest standard.
One of our past members, Ian McLean, who moved to Cowra a couple of years ago unfortunately passed away earlier this year. We miss him quite a lot for his wisdom in railway modelling and his dry humour. He had been collecting models of railway items, ships, planes and heavy machinery for about 66 years! A few days before his death Ron Middleton and I visited him in the nursing home at Cowra and we promised him that we would sell off his vast collection on behalf of his family. This has been an onerous and large task, but enjoyable in many ways. We have sold items privately but mostly via eBay. To date we have sold almost $13,000 worth. The McLean family agreed that the RHRS RMG can earn a commission of 20% for doing so. So far we have paid $2000 into RHRS accounts, with a bit more to go. These particular funds are to be used for developing our model layouts. In addition to the money earned from sales commissions Ian McLean kindly donated some good quality rolling stock to the RMG.
The RMG is significantly challenged by space limitations. In fact we have reached full capacity; some would say we have exceeded it. To this end we are looking at ways to overcome this. There are a number of options available, some realistic and, perhaps, others not so much. Currently I am having a plan drawn up by one of our members who was a builder. He is providing an option for us to consider which will also detail to some extent at least what sort of financial cost we are likely to face. Once we have that information we can then investigate what sorts of grants may be available to us.
Acknowledgement and Thanks
Now, on a personal note, I would very much like to take this opportunity of thanking RHRS for the support I have received in the last year, or indeed over several years. Then of course there is the “coffee group” of Ian, Steve, John and Ron has been a source of support, laughter and practical help to me and I value that very much.
I would also very much like to acknowledge the large amount of work Ian put into his presidency even when, at times, it came at some personal cost. Ian takes any responsibility very seriously and this was very evident in his role as President for the last three years.
Thank you Ian for your service, it is very much appreciated.
